“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” —Nelson Mandela Feeling both excited and overwhelmed just thinking about applying for college? You’re not alone. As you head into your upperclassmen years in high school, not only are you worrying about your course-load, extra-curriculars, and the barrage of information that comes at you from all sides, but there’s also the dream and anticipation of what’s to come. What a weird place to be in, right? But, we promise you, it’s all par for the course, and we’re here to help. (More than the social media posts, the hundreds of direct mail flyers that land in your actual mailbox, and your aunt’s opinion.) So, how do you find a place where you will feel happy, supported, inspired, and completely yourself? Grab your favorite iced matcha, take a deep breath, and let’s walk through the essentials for what to consider when applying for college. 1. Start Exploring Early If you happened upon this blog before your senior year, count yourself lucky. You have time to dream. Your sophomore and junior years are all about checking the vibes. Attending virtual or in-person college fairs, or wandering around campuses with your friends or family will give you a good sense of the feel of the school. Assess if you prefer the buzz of a big city campus, or a cozy, tree-lined quad, or maybe something in between. The summer before your senior year is a great time to build your list. Though you may have narrowed it down to just two or three options, many students aim for 6-10 colleges to consider. Within that list, include your “dream” college, your “target” school—where your stats fit right in, and a “likely” college—where you know you’ll not only get in, but even receive financial aid through merit-based scholarships. Following this path gives you a clear target, and ensures you have a realistic mix of competitive reaches and safe back-ups based on your criteria. 2. Learn What Matters Most in Your Application Admissions counselors are not just looking at test scores at GPAs. Most colleges use holistic admissions, meaning they want to know the real person behind the grades. Though you may think having a lengthy list of activities in which you’ve participated is best, it’s often the quality of those activities that matter most. Universities are looking to see that you’ve committed to an activity for several years, rather than doing many things for a short time. The dedication and perseverance it shows speaks volumes to if you will be successful on their campus. This isn’t foolproof, but understanding what your favorite college is looking for may help you know what to focus on in your application. Try searching online for your favorite college’s name followed by “Common Data Set Section C7” to get an idea of what that specific college values. Knowing which factors are valued by the college may help you decide if the college is the right fit. 3. Write Essays That Sound Like You You’ll likely be given prompts to use to write your personal statements or essays, but colleges are looking for your personality to shine through. The admissions team already has your list of achievements, so tell your story, not your resume. If you’re asked “Why Us?”, skip the generic compliments and mention specific clubs you want to join, professors whose research inspires you, or unique campus traditions of which you can’t wait to be a part. 4. Look for Colleges That Fit Your Academic Passion College is your chance to explore what fascinates you—the things about which you want to dive deeper. Checking out the course curriculum and resources for your assumed major will help you determine if a college has what you want to achieve from your studies. For example, some majors offer both a BS and a BA, with slightly different paths to reach your desired outcome. Find out if what YOU want to get out of your experience is offered, and, if not, it might be a signal to look elsewhere. But, if you’re like many and aren’t sure what you want to study, don’t worry. There’s always room to pivot after you’re already enrolled in a university. More than half of college students switch their major, so it is always good to select a college that has strong programs across multiple fields. 5. Think About the Real Cost (Net Price) A college’s “sticker price” is almost never what families actually end up paying. Most college websites will have what’s called a Net Price Calculator, giving you the opportunity to get a realistic estimate of the scholarships and financial aid you might receive. Aside from tuition, room and board, and other fees, many colleges will offer merit-based scholarships to help with the price of admission. 6. What Kind of Career & Mentorship Support is Offered? College is a launchpad for your independent future, so look for an environment that actively opens doors. Check to see what kind of support a university might offer through internships, career fairs, research opportunities, and a strong alumni network. 7. Prioritize Campus Culture The next four years of college, you’ll be spending a lot of time on campus—living, eating, studying, socializing. Explore the campus culture and student life options by checking out dorm setups, dining halls, wellness/support spaces, and student organizations. Does the campus feel inclusive, safe, and welcoming? Does it have what YOU need to thrive, not just survive? At the end of the day, college applications are a springboard toward your future. They’re a way to reflect on how far you have come, dream about where you want to go, and choose the environment that will help you become the best version of yourself. Trust your instincts, celebrate every small milestone along the way, and give yourself grace as you figure it all out. Your path is uniquely yours, and the right college will see and value everything you bring to the table.
